If you’ve experienced too many wintry days of grey skies, bare branches, and brown lawns, a visit to the Keukenhof gardens outside of Amsterdam is a great way to celebrate the colors of spring. This garden is only open from March 24 to May 15, 2022, and during our April visit, the tulips were at their peak beauty.
Around seven million bulbs are planted yearly, and the colors and varieties are amazing. This garden not only delights the eye but also the nose with its sweet scents emanating from the hyacinth beds.
There are ten miles of hiking trails and lots of benches for restful tulip viewing. We also took the Whisper Boat boat tour through the canals bordering the tulip fields. On this tour, we learned that the tulips in the fields aren’t grown for their blossoms but for their bulbs. The bulbs are shipped all over the world.
As Vincent Van Gogh wrote, “How right it is to love flowers and the greenery of pines and ivy and hawthorn hedges; they have been with us from the very beginning.”
